HSL investigation refutes asbestos claims over safe cement

The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) have investigated claims that chrysotile in asbestos cement changes into a non-asbestos fibrous material called Casitile. The claims also suggested that this process is 100% efficient and no chrysotile asbestos remains in the matrix and no release of airborne chrysotile fibres can occur.

Random Sample
An asbestos sample drawn in such a way that there is no set pattern and is designed to give a true representation of the entire area.

Regulated Area
An area demarcated by the employer in order to establish where airborne concentrations of asbestos exceed, or can reasonably be expected to exceed, safe limits. The regulated area may take the form of a temporary enclosure, or an area demarcated in any manner that minimizes the number of employees exposed to asbestos.

Regulated Asbestos-Containing Material (RACM)
Means (a) Friable asbestos material, (b) Category I nonfriable ACM that has become friable, (c) Category I nonfriable ACM that will be or has been subjected to sanding, grinding, cutting, or abrading, or (d) Category II nonfriable ACM that has a high probability of becoming or has become crumbled, pulverized, or reduced to powder by the forces expected to act on the material in the course of demolition or renovation operations regulated by this subpart.

The disturbance of asbestos fibres already separated from the main body so that they re-suspend into the atmosphere after having initially settled.

The taking out or stripping asbestos or materials containing asbestos.

Remove (Asbestos)
To take out RACM or facility components that contain or are covered with RACM from any facility.

The modifying of any existing structure, or portion thereof, where exposure to airborne asbestos may result.

The overhauling, rebuilding, reconstructing, or reconditioning of structures, or parts thereof, where asbestos is present.

Response Action
A method, including removal, encapsulation, enclosure, repair, operations and maintenance, that protects human health and the environment from friable Asbestos Containing Material.
